Screening Of 200 Girls And 93 Women Rescued From Sambisa Forest Begins Today

The news of the rescue of 200 girls and 93 women during a raid on Sambisa Forest on Tuesday has strengthened hope for the abducted Chibok girls. The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, confirmed that the troops of the Nigerian Army rescued 200 girls and 93 women during a raid on Sambisa Forest.

The news was broken on the Defence Headquarters Twitter timeline but Olukolade couldn’t confirm whether or not the Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram on 14th April 2014 were among the rescued ladies.

In a related development, a military source told BBC’s Sam Piranty that, “Military operation in Sambisa is continuing. Military only 25km into the forest as we speak. We still have another 50sq km to go in Sambisa so having already found these girls is a great sign. Boko Haram continuing to flee from Sambisa forest each day, we are making many inroads.”

An intelligence source however told Reuters that, “The rescued girls and women will be screened on Wednesday to determine whether they had been abducted or if they were married to the militants. Now they are excited about their freedom. Tomorrow there will be screenings to determine whether they are Boko Haram wives, whether they are from Chibok, how long they have been in the camps, and if they have children.”
