A Texas politician tweeted a homophobic message just hours after 50 people were murdered in a gay club in Orlando. In the deadliest gun massacre in US history, a suspected Islamic extremist held more than 100 people hostage before gunning them down.
As the country reels in response to the news, Lieutenant Governor of Texas Dan Patrick - a fierce anti-LGBT campaigner - posted a picture of a psalm implying men are responsible for their own fate.
'Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Galations 6:7,' the tweet read.
Patrick posted the tweet at 7am Central Time - two hours after the three-hour siege on Pulse nightclub came to an end.
His tweet has however sparked outrage.
'Where is your compassion?' one Twitter user hit back. Another said: 'You should be ashamed of yourself.'
Despite the backlash, Patrick's social media team responded by posting the message again on his Facebook page at 10am.
Patrick's website currently has a petition on the homepage urging visitors to join his campaign against transgender people being allowed to choose which bathroom to use.
He's also pushed pro-life, anti-abortion bills and open carry gun laws.
